Detection of Co - and Postseismic Displacements from Large Earthquakes with Alos / Palsar

چکیده
We have been studying coand postseismic displacements from large earthquakes since mid-2006, using ALOS PALSAR images acquired before and after these events. Due to its wavelength, coherence is high even in heavily vegetated areas or steep ranges. We can estimate slip distribution of these earthquakes based on the observed interferograms using a nonlinear inversion scheme. So far, we could not detect notable postseismic displacement. We recognize possible tropospheric/ionospheric disturbances which seem to be larger than ENVISAT interferograms. In case of 2009 Sumatra, huge disturbance prevented us from the detction of coseismic displacements from the first quake. Despite of these obstacles, ALOS/PALSAR gives us excellent view of coseismic displacements, and obviously superior to C-band radar especially in heavily vegetated areas or steep ranges.

The Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS), launched on 24 January 2006, is a Japanese satellite carrying an L-band SAR sensor, namely the PALSAR, which is expected to demonstrate good performance in applications such as crustal deformation measurement, subsidence detection and landslide monitoring. This paper describes a case study of Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (DIn...
متن کاملSeafloor observations indicate spatial separation of coseismic and postseismic slips in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake
Large interplate earthquakes are often followed by postseismic slip that is considered to occur in areas surrounding the coseismic ruptures. Such spatial separation is expected from the difference in frictional and material properties in and around the faults. However, even though the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake ruptured a vast area on the plate interface, the estimation of high-resolution slip is u...
متن کاملSAR interferometry using ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 data for the Mw 7.8 Gorkha, Nepal earthquake
The Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2, “DAICHI-2”) has been observing Nepal with the Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 (PALSAR-2) in response to an emergency request from Sentinel Asia related to the Mw 7.8 Gorkha earthquake on April 25, 2015. PALSAR-2 successfully detected not only avalanches and local crustal displacements but also continental-scale deformation. Es...

This paper gives an overview of activities and results from the Swedish part of the international calibration and validation efforts for ALOS PALSAR. Four large trihedral corner reflectors were deployed and the measured co-polar responses showed that the PALSAR system performed well and was stable over time. The cross-talk level was found to be lower than – 34.5 dB. Two different methods for es...
متن کاملDetection of Ice Sheet Elevation and Grounding Line Using ALOS / PALSAR Data
This paper describes the research plan to use ALOS / PALSAR data for Antarctic ice sheet analysis. The final goal of our study is to extract the precise ice sheet elevation and estimate accurate position of grounding line using ALOS / PALSAR data. The authors have been studying the grounding line and ice sheet topography from InSAR data, which mainly used ERS-1/2 tandem data. We plan to adopt t...
